With The Force Awakens just a few months away, Disney used this year’s D23 Expo to go all out in teasing the new film and beyond. First up, a D23 exclusive poster for the upcoming release was revealed that shows original star Harrison Ford along with newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley as “Finn” and “Rey” and new villain “Kylo Ren” played by Adam Driver. Probably the biggest reveal is Boyega’s character brandishing a lightsaber that looks like it could potentially be Anakin Skywalker’s original that Luke Skywalker lost in Empire Strikes Back and will play a significant role in the film. Cast members John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o and Harrison Ford along with director J.J. Abrams were on hand to thank the crowd, but little else about the film was revealed.
The next big Star Wars announcement at the event was the first official cast photo for next year’s first Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One. In addition to previously announced Felicity Jones, the cast also includes Nightcrawler’s Riz Ahmed, Elysium’s Diego Luna, Bloodline’s Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen, Chinese actor Jiang Wen, action star Donnie Yen and Alan Tudyk who will play a motion capture character in the film. The film, set to arrive in theaters on December 16th, 2016 will take place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will explore the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective as a team of rebels set out to steal the plans to the original Death Star.
Looking ahead even further, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow was officially announced as the director of Episode 9, which is slated to hit theaters sometime in 2019. Of course, the biggest Star Wars news announced at D23 wasn’t film related at all. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that two massive new lands based on Star Wars will be built at the original Disneyland in Anaheim and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando. No word yet on when the new parks will open, but they will be the largest single-themed land expansions ever built at the parks and will include a cantina featuring original and new characters and two signature attractions including one that will allow park goers to take control of the Millennium Falcon in a secret mission for the Resistance.
